LA QUINTA NORTE ESTATE

5200 Zaca Station Road
Santa Ynez Valley, California

Offered at $8,900,000

THE LA QUINTA NORTE STORY:  Magazines have called La Quinta Norte one of the world’s great houses, but the story of how this famed property came to be is equally interesting. Douglas S. Cramer, an iconic film and television producer of such hits as Dynasty, The Brady Bunch, and Mission Impossible, was looking for a place to have a second home; close enough to the environs of Los Angeles, but far enough so that he could escape. Architectural Digest featured an article on the property in which Cramer states he looked up the Coast from San Diego to Napa Valley for a place that was “visually exciting” and had a great climate. He ultimately found a magical spot at the junction of Zaca Station Road and Foxen Canyon, now part of the Santa Ynez Valley’s famed Foxen Canyon Wine Trail.

Enlisting the noted Peter Choate & Associates architecture firm and the famed interior designer, Michael Taylor, Cramer embarked on a 3-year build process that they called “insane perfectionism.” Taylor revolutionized the “California Look” that brought the outdoors in and was an expert at working on grand scale and making dramatic use of natural materials. He was known for his use of indigenous materials and the Choate and Taylor design team made liberal use of native sandstone boulders and Yosemite slate material throughout. The result of this remarkable collaboration is the 20,000 square foot masterpiece that magazines have called “one of the great houses of the world”, the “Master Taylor’s last masterpiece”, and “a major feat and fusion of brilliant architecture and great interior design”.

At a magical spot along the prestigious Foxen Canyon Wine Trail, you will find La Quinta Norte, an enchanting 64+/- acre vineyard estate that includes what magazines have called “one of the world’s great houses”.

A private, gated entrance winds past vineyards, a pond, and bird habitat finally culminating at the entrance of the main residence nestled against a hillside, surrounded by sweeping terraces and lush gardens overlooking the vineyards.

The 20,000+/- square foot main residence designed by world renowned architects and interior designers, is 5 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms, with grand scale living that blends southwestern and Mediterranean influences. The house prominently features Yosemite slate materials throughout, warm wood beamed ceilings, 15th Century Celtic carved stone archways, clay wine cellar, and a water feature which cascades from the upper terrace down to the lower foyer. An abundance of glass opens the home to remarkable views and vistas while sound, lighting, and security systems compliment the exceptional comfort, design, and privacy of the house.

The terraced façade overlooks lush gardens and a free form rock swimming pool reminiscent of a tropical paradise. This oasis is completed by a fully appointed 2 bedroom, 3 bath guest cabana with changing room and steam room.

Just outside the walled garden is a lighted tennis court with viewing pavilion. A large stocked pond is jointly used for recreational purposes and vineyard frost protection.

FOXEN CANYON:  Foxen Canyon is an integral part of the renowned Santa Barbara County’s wine trail with over two dozen vineyards and wineries.
This area has developed a stellar reputation for growing some of the regions premier vines and producing some of our area’s finest wines. The road winds through vineyards, alternating between gorgeous mesas with broad vistas and oak studded hills.

In the distance are pine topped mountains, showing the diversity of elevations in this area and natural landscape. The land turns green through the late fall and into spring and then the hills turn golden with spring bringing out a colorful natural display of poppies and lupine. The leaf of the vines turn green and this, punctuated with the green oaks against the golden grasses in late spring through early fall, make for a classic California landscape.

The vineyard produces premium estate grown wine from the approximately 35 to 40 acres of Riesling, Syrah, Sangiovese, Grenache, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon varietals. With a perfect climate for growing of grapes, the valley has received world-wide acclaim as on one the great wine areas of the world.

Comfortably distanced from the other residences is a 2,200+/- sf 2-bedroom, ½ bath staff/guest house as well as a 2 story structure now used as barrel storage and offices for the vineyard .

It is now offered for the first time in many years, having had only 2 owners who have lovingly maintained and honored the creativity behind the design and build.

Simply irreplaceable.

SANTA YNEZ VALLEY:  A mere two hours north of Los Angeles, 4 hours from the San Francisco Bay Area, and only 30 minutes from Santa Barbara, one is enveloped in a landscape of vineyards, horse ranches, farms and schoolhouses. You travel back in time where simple pleasures, open spaces, mossy oaks, grassy fields, seas of blue lupine, bright orange poppies and warm sunny days are found. It seems impossible that such a place still exists in 21st Century California. The Santa Ynez Valley has become the best kept secret of the celebrity crowd. Silicon Valley and the Bay Area have also found this magical Valley a best kept secret alternative to Napa. The geography is more wide open, has a coastal influence and offers a buyer much better land value than the Napa Area. All who are fortunate enough to live in Santa Ynez seem to closely guard its quiet serenity.

Local schools are ranked as some of the top in the State and the medical care system is part of the larger Cottage Hospital Network; one of the finest in the country.

The area is also known for a variety of equine disciplines and combined with Veterinary care that is ranked as one of the top in the country, the valley is one of the last bastions for those wanting to pursue their love of the equine world. Hiking, cycling, golf, restaurants, what else could one possibly want!
